Oxford Sport & Traditional Martial Arts offers programmes for everyone! Our professionally structured classes range from our Tiny Turtles sessions which caters for children as young as 2 years of age right through to adults. We offer parent and toddler sessions, children's beginner Karate classes, adult beginner Karate classes, ladies only classes, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes, Mixed Martial Arts classes and specific competition classes too.
Tiny Turtles is an on going parent and toddler session for children aged 2 and 3 years. Content within this class primarily prepares children with the skills not just to progress in to our martial programmes but for all sports and activities. Each lesson is filled with parachute games, team games, ball games, musical games, movement, balance, cooperation and coordination skills where stickers, medals and badges are frequently rewarded.
OSTMA Lions – The OSTMA Lions programme is a special programme designed for children aged 4 & 5 years. This fun-filled introduction to martial arts has a big emphasis on life and safety skills whilst demonstrating that fitness is fun.
Some of the safety skills involved include Fire safety, First aid, Health, Home safety, Traffic safety and Stranger awareness. Life skills include Balance, Co-operation, Co-ordination, Listening, Memory and Nutrition. These skills help the students become well rounded by promoting the child's social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth.
The focus of the OSTMA Lions class is to develop fundamental basics. Therefore, we teach very few of the martial arts skills that you will see in older children's programmes. Instead, we focus on the skills they need BEFORE entering the older classes. Our primary objective is to get the students involved, giving 100% effort, having fun and playing.
The OSTMA Lions programme is designed to catch all children early and help them develop terrific life skills that will make them not only a better citizen but a healthier one as well.
Children's Martial Arts
Children’s martial arts – Based upon both sport & traditional yet modern and evolving karate sessions, our children’s martial arts classes start from the age of 6. Through exciting and engaging instruction, our dedicated team of professional, motivated and enthusiastic instructors will guide your child through their martial arts journey, help them set and most importantly, achieve their goals along the way. The sessions offer a structured karate syllabus, teaching that perserverance leads to success in martial arts, at school and in life!
Incorporated in all children's martial arts are our child Safety Programmes. These programmes focus on stranger awareness and bully proofing. Raising the awareness of what do to if approached by a stranger is paramount at OSTMA. Our students are taught about safe zones and how to recognize “safer strangers” if in trouble. Like our stranger awareness programme, proofing our students against bullies is also paramount. We teach our students a calm approach to dealing with not just the “verbal” bully but the physical one too.
Adults & Ladies only Martial Arts
Adult martial arts classes – Again, this programme is based upon both sport & traditional yet modern and evolving karate sessions. We focus on the art of Karate providing a friendly, social environment to learn this time honoured martial art. These sessions are of mixed genders.
Ladies only martial arts. Taught under the guidance of a female instructor, these sessions provide tuition to ladies that feel more at ease training with the same sex. These sessions offer self defence in various situations where females could feel vulnerable. Fun, fitness, flexibility, confidence building, striking pads and understanding the ability to escape difficult situations are part of the course each week within these lessons.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is an amazingly effective martial art that uses leverage opposed to power or physical size to control an attacker. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves or another against a bigger, stronger, heavier assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint locks and choke holds to defeat the opponent. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments and in self-defence situations.
OSTMA is affiliated to the Roger Gracie Academy, under the senior guidance of Aylesbury based Kevin Capel and his instructor, Roger Gracie. BJJ classes are available for all age ranges.
Mixed Martial Arts sessions
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). A combination of striking and grappling both on the ground and standing is what you will find in our Mixed Martial Arts sessions. Taught by seasoned MMA fighters, our classes offer a friendly, ego free atmosphere where students can learn this system for enjoyment, self defence or competition.
